A discussion with Harper Reed, CTO of Threadless.com and the creator of the Google App Engine/Django powered Excla.im jabber bot for Twitter messaging.
Exla.im is a somewhat new project for Reed. He took the opportunity, thanks to pressure from his peers, to give Django a try and as you’ll tell when listening – he absolutely loves it. Excla.im runs on Google App Engine and employs the google-app-engine-django to ease the process of creating a Django project to run on the Google App Engine.
Beyond being the shirt slingin’ CTO of the community powered Threadless.com, Harper also Harper also blogs a decent amount and reads a ton of books, and recent put together a Chicago Transit API .
We talked everything from database denormalization, nested queries, Threadless, some Rails, Django, the holiday season, and a yoyos. Harper seems to love to talk, or at least feels really open to letting it fly, and I mean that in a good way. He knows his stuff and he can just keep rolling. I wish I could have tackled some specific points on his App Engine experience and some further details of the inner workings of the Exla.im infrastructure as well as his Chicago Transit API project. Maybe next time…
The call dropped two times, but I think I did a pretty decent job slicing and dicing it to come through aok. Enjoy.

Is there a podcast feed for these Callcasts? I see that http://thisweekindjango.com/feeds/netcast/callcasts/ exists, but it apparently doesn't include the MP3s as enclosures - attempting to subscribe to it with iTunes fails. Would love to have these either integrated into the regular Twid feed or set up as a separate feed.

Scot, we'll get that into a future release, but thanks for the request. It's definitely needed!
